Tehran unfazed by Trump’s “radical” Tweet

Iran protests 2018 Tehran

Professor Arshin Adib-Moghaddam has said that President’s Trump’s recent capitalised salvo will be largely ignored by the Iranian leader Hassan Rouhani.

The much shared tweet came in response to a speech by Rhouhani, where he warned that the US shouldn’t “play with lion’s tail”.

“The comments are radical, even for the standards of President Trump. The threats are ignored exactly because Trump is perceived as a ‘talker’, not only in Iran but elsewhere as well. Iran sees itself in a very advantageous position within the region.

“The more the Trump and Netanyahu administrations radicalise their policies towards Iran, the more it is perceived as a sign of strategic lethargy and weakness.”

After Trump’s tirade, there were many political commentators taking to social media and the mainstream broadcasters predicting World War 3. Should we be concerned?

“We are entering one of the most dangerous periods in world politics since the end of the Cold War. The Trump administration has launched and all out economic and political war against Iran. Trump did not only break the JCPOA [the Iran deal] – one of the most important contemporary counterproliferation agreements – his administration is staffed with anti-Iran radicals who are actively pursuing the myth of regime change.”

Arshin Adib-Moghaddam is co-Convenor of the MA in Iranian Studies at SOAS University of London and author of Psycho-nationalism: Global Thought, Iranian Imaginations.
