Students and academics have been celebrating the 9th SOAS Taiwan Studies Summer School at SOAS University of London. The event runs over four days and includes a wide range of activities, including documentary film screenings, music performances, lectures, book launches, seminars, tutorials and a roundtable discussion.

Speakers and attendees include Christopher Lupke (Washington State University); Nancy Guy (University of California, San Diego); the film director Chung Chuan; writers Ma Shih-fang, Cora Tao, Ma Kuo Kuang and Chang Tieh-chih; Lin Chen-yu (University of Liverpool); and from SOAS, Dafydd Fell, Chang Bi-yu and Charles Chen.

Since the establishment of the Taiwan Studies Programme in 1999, SOAS has become one of the leading centres for Taiwan Studies in the world.

Taiwan occupies a critical geo-strategic position in the Asia-Pacific region and the development of its relationship with Mainland China, as well as the countries of North East and South East Asia, is already an important shaping influence on economic and political developments throughout the region.

The SOAS MA programme in Taiwan Studies is the first postgraduate degree focussing on contemporary Taiwan in the English-speaking world. It provides an unrivalled programme of advanced interdisciplinary courses on Taiwan’s politics, society and culture, film, law, and languages.

Staff and students of the SOAS programme share their views on video.
