Academic Summer School 2017

SOAS Front 6

Do you want to make the summer your London experience? Have you thought about enjoying three weeks in London while studying in the company of interesting people, discussing some of the world’s pressing issues, guided by leading experts?  Have a look at the SOAS University of London Academic Summer School.

The annual SOAS Summer School has run a highly-rated series of courses taught by leading SOAS academics, whose practical insights and cutting-edge knowledge will help students delve into topics, such as:

Joining a SOAS Summer School course will enable you to experience cutting-edge research and study, innovative teaching and practice-oriented learning.  As is the case with SOAS students on full-time degree programmes, you will learn to challenge the status quo, think critically, and take nothing for granted: skills, which have made SOAS graduates so valuable to employers.

Recent summer school participants tell you directly about their experience in the video (link below).  9/10 of them said (in the latest survey 2016) that they would recommend the programme to others.   Their endorsement reflects the University’s 90% score (National Student Survey 2016) that ranks it 1st in London for teaching.

Coming to SOAS for the summer will enable you to network with students from all over the world, and to have a taste of what studying at SOAS during the academic year is like:

It was the best teaching I’ve ever experienced. I was so very impressed and really inspired.”  Olivia, Development and Conflict

The level of the sessions is the equivalent of a second or third year undergraduate module, and as a result many participants are undergraduates, who will gain credits for their course of study.  The Summer School also attracts postgraduates, and others from a wide variety of backgrounds, including NGOs, charities, or government agencies, looking to refresh their knowledge or discover new topics.  On average 5% of Summer School students decide to go on to a degree programme.

Based on previous years, your fellow classmates might be from any one of 79+ countries worldwide:  The spread of nationalities (Africa – 8%, America – 12%, Asia – 25%, Europe – 54, Oceania – 1%) reflects the diversity of SOAS more generally, which is ranked 6th in the world for the highest percentage (c. 54%) of international students.  (Times Higher Education, 2017).

Enrolment is still available for remaining places on Session 2-courses (3-21 July) and Session 3-courses (24 July-11August).

Closing dates for applications:

12 June 2017 (Session 2 courses)

3 July 2017      (Session 3 courses)
