Student Profile: Alexa, MSc Middle East Politics

SOAS student - Politics and International Studies

I am currently studying a one year MSc Middle East Politics. My professors are brilliant. I studied Middle Eastern Studies in my undergraduate degree, and was lucky enough to live in the region before coming to SOAS, but I was really looking for a solid grounding in political theory from this programme. The professors in the Politics Department (and others!) are quite skilled in translating these theories into analysis of current events, guiding our critical thinking, and really pushing us to interrogate the ways in which we approach the studies of politics.

What I enjoy most about studying at SOAS is having the opportunity to engage with both my incredible department faculty as well as the general student body here at SOAS on a daily basis and emerge myself in conversations about theorists and current events. I am constantly amazed by the range of experience and expertise amongst members of the SOAS community! And, of course, the discounted coffee in the SU.

I am most passionate about looking at why things work in the ways that they do, and how this understanding can change approaches. In practice, this means that I’m fiercely passionate about advocating for the rights of Palestinians, countering generalisations in studies of the Middle East, and fighting against structural inequalities.
