The Jewish Leadership Council (JLC), which helps connect and coordinate the Jewish charitable sector, has recently appointed SOAS alumna, Claudia Mendoza, as joint CEO of the organisation.

The JLC aims to forward the interests of the Jewish community in Britain, strengthening and amplifying the collective voice of its members. This is an objective fully supported by SOAS, and it’s fantastic news for the university that the JLC have decided to appoint one of our alumni to such a prestigious role.

Claudia, who graduated from the university with a postgraduate degree in Middle Eastern Studies, will work alongside Michelle Janes as a joint CEO.

Claudia says she has always had a strong interest in Israel, which was strengthened through her study at SOAS. The MA programme she took at SOAS put its emphasis on the modern period, through modules in history, geography, politics, economics and anthropology. This postgraduate degree proved pivotal during Claudia’s time as a research analyst specialising in the Israel region, a job she took following her graduation from SOAS. After this, Claudia went on to join the JLC in 2011, as director of policy public affairs.

Claudia’s appointment as CEO is a great example of what SOAS graduates can go on to achieve.
