Two graduates reflect on their experiences of the 2017 SOAS Academic Summer School.

Carson Conlon studied ‘Understanding Africa’:

The rich history of African Studies at SOAS inspired me to take this particular course. Summer School provided a great opportunity to fully immerse oneself in the SOAS community. It was a pleasure to focus my energy on one class, under the extraordinary guidance of Professor Seraphim Kamdem.

“Understanding Africa” was a dynamic class, which met my particular objectives and interests.

The course incorporated several field trips to the British Museum, October Gallery, and other African related institutions. Students were provided an opportunity to hear from professionals in many fields and pursue their individual research interests. It was an excellent learning experience, which I would recommend to anyone interested in African Studies. The module has inspired me to continue taking Summer Classes at SOAS.

I am interested in Colonial Africa and pre-modern Islamic world.  This fall I will enter my third year as an Undergraduate History student at SOAS.

Chiara Genovese studied ‘The Middle East in Global Politics’.

My first degree was in finance and maths. I am now working as MEAL Specialist in Lebanon for a cash assistance consortium of NGOs in support of the Syrian crisis.  Over the years, I became interested in Middle East history, culture and language. This is mostly thanks to Iranian and Turkish friends I met in London

SOAS gives plenty of room for personal initiative and free thinking. My home institution was more rigid, with options being either right or wrong, other than just different.

I met very interesting people, who were very committed and passionate. Overall it was an eye-opening experience.

The SOAS Summer School was a springboard for a career change and the start of my new career in humanitarian aid industry.
