The Cowrie Scholarship Foundation aim to fund 100 Black British Students through UK Universities in the next decade. They work with partner UK universities to provide scholarships to Black African and Caribbean heritage applicants from socio-economically under-represented backgrounds studying for their undergraduate degrees.
Applications are open for a Cowrie Scholarship to study at SOAS
This year, SOAS is one of the institutions working with the Cowrie Foundation to support Black British students to study here. Applications are now open for this year’s SOAS undergraduate applicants.
This scholarship will cover Home/UK tuition fees and offer a stipend of up to £10,000 for each year of the programme (£8,000 from Cowrie and £2,000 from SOAS). To apply, you must be a resident in the UK, have applied to SOAS and are starting undergraduate study in the academic year 2022/23.
Meet current scholars from around the UK
“The scholarship takes away the pressures of debt and really needing to work in order to live away from home. I plan on doing a study abroad, and it’s allowing me to save for that, as well as send some money home to my family. I’m really excited about the mentorship programme, and I hope I really connect with my mentor because it’s going to be an opportunity to network and make connections, as well as getting advice whenever I feel lost.”
“The scholarship itself has already allowed me to leverage the opportunities at university that I would otherwise have likely missed out on. I can buy ancillary textbooks and materials for my course to deepen my understanding. I was able to join the Robotics and Paintball societies without any major impact on my finances. The mentoring programme will allow me to speak to individuals with career experience and perspectives useful to me when looking into graduate employment.”
