Graduation is one of the most exciting and important events of the year at SOAS University of London.

This year’s ceremonies take place between Wednesday 27th July and Friday 29th July. The event is an occasion for celebrating the huge achievements of SOAS students, welcoming family and friends, and marking the important role that SOAS plays in the modern world.

On campus, the days are characterised by lively performances of world music; colourful food stalls; countless photo and selfie opportunities; and catching up with friends, old and new. This year the music to accompany the ceremonies will include performances by Grupo Lokito; Kadialy Kouyate; Maya Youssef; Cheng Yu; Trio SRF; and Tatcho Drom Trio.

The President of SOAS, Graça Machel, will attend each ceremony. Graça Machel is a renowned international advocate for women and children’s rights and has been a social and political activist for many decades.

Graduands will receive their qualifications in a wide range of subjects across the social sciences, humanities and languages.

SOAS offers more than 350 undergraduate degree combinations and over 115 postgraduate programmes, all with a distinctive regional focus and global relevance. Additionally, SOAS is the largest provider of postgraduate distance learning courses in the University of London’s International Programmes, with more than 4000 students in 160 countries.

Catch the magic of the day, by following the SOAS Graduation ceremonies live via the online streaming of the event, or through updates on Facebook and Twitter. Remember to search for #soasgrad.

A traditional feature of graduation ceremonies has always been for students to throw their mortarboard hat into the air although, in recent years, some universities have banned this practice, citing that a number of graduates have been hurt by falling hats! Let’s hope that the SOAS ceremonies proceed without any mortarboard-related casualties!
