Bangladesh’s new Chief Justice is a SOASian

Supreme Court Bangladesh, Chief Justice Mahmud Hossain

“SOAS students and alumni are some of the very best”. Words uttered by Professor Carol Tan, Head of the School of Law at SOAS University of London.

Well, bold claims require strong evidence.

It is therefore with great pleasure (but little surprise) that the 22nd Chief Justice of Bangladesh has just been revealed to be a SOAS Law graduate.

Syed Mahmud Hossain studied for BSc and LLB degrees before coming to SOAS in 1993 to gain the six-month long “Commonwealth Young Lawyers” degree.

The news follows the appointment of another SOAS graduate to a senior legal position – Akhlaq Choudhury QC – who became the first person of Bangladeshi origin to become a UK High Court Judge back in September 2017.

Read the full coverage of Hossain’s impressive career in the Dhaka Tribune.
