A report from the British Council looking into the languages that will be most important for the UK after Brexit has both Mandarin and Arabic in the top five.

Turkish, Malay, Hindi and other Indian languages also scored highly and it’s anticipated that their importance will grow in the years after Brexit.
Dr Adam Marshall, Director General, British Chambers of Commerce, said “The UK’s future relationship with the European Union is dominating current thinking. However, this is not the only thing that matters for the country. The UK could get the best Brexit deal possible, but this will matter little if the fundamentals here at home aren’t up to scratch, leaving us unable to take advantage of the possibilities available across the world.”
One school quick of the mark is the Belfast Royal Academy, which, for the past year, has been trialling Arabic lessons in an effort to encourage students to see the potential benefits of speaking non-European languages for their future careers.
Turkish, Malay, Hindi and other Indian languages also scored highly
At SOAS, we have unrivalled linguistic expertise in the languages that will go on to shape the 21st century and beyond.
